Diabetes is becoming more common among young adults, especially in Asia. There is an increase in gestational diabetic women, which increases the risk for both the mother and her baby to develop diabetes. This puts them in danger of developing other serious conditions such as kidney disease, heart disease, etc. at a time when they are at their most productive. Insulin resistance is primarily caused by obesity and lack physical activity.

Diabetic Living India reports that our country is moving closer to two epidemics interconnected – type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by high blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin, while type 2 diabetes occurs when the cells in the body do not respond to insulin. Diabetes can cause hunger, increased thirst and frequent urination. Type 1 diabetes is often genetically inherited, but type 2 diabetes can be caused by lifestyle factors. This is one of many ‘lifestyle’ diseases that plague people in developed countries. It has a link with heart disease, hypertension and weight gain.

No physical activity, junk food high in sugars, complex carbohydrates, and saturated fats as well as sedentary lifestyles are all factors that have contributed to an increase in diabetes and obesity.

Have you ever wondered if you could control your blood sugar at home?

Holy Basil Leaves – Also known as tulsi or holy basil, the leaves are rich in antioxidants and essential oil that produces eugenol (and methyl eugenol) and caryophyllene. These substances work together to support the proper function of pancreatic beta-cells (cells which store and release insulin). In turn, this increases insulin sensitivity. The antioxidants in the leaves also help to combat the effects of oxidative stresses.

You can lower blood sugar by eating two to three whole tulsi leaves or a tablespoon of the juice.

Flax Seeds – Due to the high fibre content, flaxseeds aid digestion and in the proper absorption fats and sugars. Flax seeds can help diabetics reduce their postprandial blood sugar levels by nearly 28 percent.

The leaves of the bilberry plant are also known as neelabadari plants. They have been used for centuries in Ayurveda to control diabetes. The Journal of Nutrition recently reported that the leaves of Bilberry plants contain high levels of anthocyanidin which increases the activity of proteins involved in glucose transport and fat metabolism.

Cinnamon, also known as dalchini improves insulin sensitivity. It lowers blood glucose levels. Cinnamon: A teaspoon per day is enough to improve insulin sensitivity, control weight and reduce heart disease risk.

Add about 1 gram dalchini to your diet every day for about a week. This will help you lower blood sugar.
