The presence of flavanols in chocolate has been shown to improve brain function, blood flow and reduce the risk of heart disease.

In the article, Dr.Eileen Canday, Head of Department, Nutrition and Dietetics, at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, explains to us all of the benefits of including dark cocoa in our daily diet.

The Amazing Benefits of Chocolate for Your Brain Health

Dietary elements found in dark chocolate can influence moods and emotions.

Reduces depressive symptoms

The release of endorphins in the brain helps to alleviate depression. Endorphins act as sedatives that provide a sense of happiness and pleasure.

Serotonin increases

Serotonin has been recognized as a powerful antidepressant.

Boosts “euphoric” neurochemicals

The psychoactive ingredient anandamide is responsible for the production of dopamine. This produces a feeling euphoria.

Reduces inflammation

The flavonoids in cocoa have antioxidant, antiviral, antitumour and anti-inflammatory properties. They also increase the cerebral blood flow and oxygen level and thus improve the electrical activity in the brain. The flavanols prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Gut-brain axis

Research shows that chocolate can have a prebiotic affect on the gut, and help diversify the microbiome of the gut by encouraging the growth of healthy bacteria. Dysbiotic guts can result in lowered levels brain-derived neurotrophic factors which are essential for maintaining existing brain cells as well as the development of new brain cells.

No Excuse for Overindulgence! Although dark chocolate is good for your brain, it is not a reason to overindulge. Choose a chocolate that is sugar-free and contains at least 70% cacao.
